Kathryn Stott and Sir James MacMillan awarded King’s Medal for Music

Turnage’s opera Festen was among the works and musicians honoured at the 2026 RPS Awards, who also include Peter Moore, Elizabeth Alker, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Kirkaldy Orchestral Society. 

The Estonian conductor will succeed Edward Gardner, as London orchestra begins to look towards its centenary in 2032.

The Swedish-born ballet star shaped generations of dancers and left a lasting imprint on British and international ballet. 

John Harte will become only the tenth person to manage the London Symphony Orchestra in its 122-year history.

The multi-arts centre in the City of London, once dubbed “the world's most bewildering arts centre”, will close for a year in 2028 for major works to be completed ahead of its 50th anniversary in 2032.

The King made a surprise visit to the prestigious conducting competition in London, currently being filmed for a Sky Arts series Making A Maestro, broadcast next spring.
