Marzena Diakun appointed new chief conductor at Rheinische Philharmonie

Turnage’s opera Festen was among the works and musicians honoured at the 2026 RPS Awards, who also include Peter Moore, Elizabeth Alker, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Kirkaldy Orchestral Society. 

Commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra and was due to be premiered at Washington DC’s Kennedy Center, but was withdrawn by the composer in protest over President Trump’s actions.

The award is given annually to an outstanding individual or group of musicians who have had a major influence on musical life in the UK.

The Estonian conductor will succeed Edward Gardner, as London orchestra begins to look towards its centenary in 2032.

One of the most significant composers of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, Kurtág celebrates his 100th birthday on 19th February 2026.
