Handel’s pasticcio Elpidia (L’Elpidia overo li rivali generosi) Opera Settecento’s concert on 31 March will represent the opera’s first performance since it received 17 performances at The Haymarket Theatre in 1725. Apostolo Zeno’s text was not translated for his audience (due to lack of time according to his publisher) nor does it include Belisario’s arias. Handel created this pasticcio to showcase the most attractive arias from the preceding Venetian carnival season, with a special emphasis on Vinci whose music was largely unknown in London at that time. Handel utilises several arias by Vinci, mainly from Ifigenia and Rosmira, also from Camilla, but his singers also brought arias into the mix by Lotti, Sarro, Capelli and Orlandini.

Another exciting and unusual performance from Opera Settecento.
