Pushkin’s classic novel in verse, Eugene Onegin, had profound personal resonances for Tchaikovsky: the conflict between the decadence of cosmopolitan St Petersburg and the innocence of Russian rural life; and a selfish hero rejecting the love of an infatuated young woman. His opera of 1877 is a lyrical masterpiece, incorporating as it does the epic — peasant dances, elegant ball scenes — as well as the intimacy of a young girl letter-writing through the night, and the violence of a fatal duel.

It was Tchaikovsky’s express wish that Eugene Onegin should be performed by his conservatory students in Moscow. Royal Academy Opera is proud to present it here, directed by John Ramster and conducted by the Academy’s Director of Opera, Jane Glover.
