Based on the events that led to the foundation of the Roman Republic, The Rape of Lucretia, a work of distilled ferocity and intensity, is the piece for which Britten coined the term ‘chamber opera’.

The chaste Roman noblewoman Lucretia is raped by Tarquinius, spoiled son of the Etruscan king of Rome, and kills herself rather than live with the shame. Throughout the piece, a Male and Female Chorus from the modern world comment on the action.

Royal Academy Opera is delighted to welcome back eminent Britten specialist Steuart Bedford to conduct. John Ramster returns as director following his acclaimed production of Eugene Onegin in 2013.
