Ravel’s Sonatine – performed in transcription for oboe – prefaced a lush reading of Britten’s Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge.

There were no unorthodox interpretations in this program, which featured The Cleveland Orchestra’s associate concertmaster Jung-Min Amy Lee in Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto, just excellent, straightforward music making.

Sir Andrew Davis also led superb performances of Delius’ Brigg Fair and Strauss’ Don Quixote, with Mark Kosower and Wesley Collins as soloists.

Although Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique was the headline work for the September 27th Cleveland Orchestra concert at Severance Hall, the big news was principal oboist Frank Rosenwein’s personal triumph as soloist in Richard Strauss’ 1946 Oboe Concerto, with music director Franz Welser-Möst conducting.
