Performer: Sol Gabetta

A concerto and a symphony both in the key of E minor make an interesting pairing in this BBC Symphony Orchestra concert, whereas the phantasmagoria of stage lighting and two new works add very little.

On an eclectic programme that also featured superstar soloist Sol Gabetta, ear-opening Shaw and suave Saint-Saëns balanced muscular Beethoven. 

The Czech Philharmonic, in tremendous form, still play their core repertoire with unaffected naturalness.

Igor Stravinsky once described Sergei Rachmaninov as "a six-and-a-half foot scowl". His Second Symphony – often a lugubrious affair – was here turned into something urgent and vital.
