Work: Khovanshchina: Prelude "Dawn on the Moscow River"

There is something peculiarly Russian about the capacity for suffering as exemplified in the music of Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky. Maria Ioudenitch, Stanislav Kochanovsky and the Dresden Philharmonic are excellent interpreters at Cadogan Hall.

Canellakis and the LPO are in fighting form with Brahms’ Fourth Symphony, while Pablo Ferrández provides subtlety and sardonic bite in Shostakovich. 

Anna Clyne's superb cello concerto is given a beautiful performance by Alban Gerhardt and the BBC Philharmonic under Ben Gernon.
