Work: Symphony no. 1 in E major

True to himself, Sir Simon Rattle and the LSO offered a mouth-watering programme of contrasts. The first half pointing clearly to the modern world worked better than the backward glance at a great Romantic symphony.

After Jan Lisiecki gave an immaculate interpretation of a perennial Mozart piano concerto, Sebastian Weigle revelled in the brassy bravura of a symphony which remains virtually unknown in the city where it was composed over a hundred years ago.

The OAE with Sir Simon Rattle at the helm play three representative Viennese works from the same year: Brahms, Hans Rott and Bruckner.
