Memories of Trees

The women of the Ragazze Quartet consistently surprise with innovative, theatrical programmes that demonstrate a strong engagement with what is happening in the world. In this musical and visual tale, they join forces with audiovisual artist Jurjen Alkema and composer Kate Moore to tell the story of the extraordinary wood types that their string instruments are made from. How does a tree’s journey unfold, from timber to plank, to instrument, and finally, to music?

Through striking visuals, soundscapes, and a stage setting that depicts the inside of string instruments, the Ragazze Quartet transports you into a dreamlike journey through nature, to the trees and their unique qualities. In doing so, they portray our connection to vulnerable ecosystems and the history of the surprisingly sustainable craft of violin making.
