Bel canto, but then in private
Not all arias are meant for the main stage. In addition to their dramatic masterpieces, the three pre-eminent composers of Italian bel canto also wrote many romanzas, ballatas and ariettas for more intimate settings. Vincenzo Bellini and Gioachino Rossini made a rich contribution to the musical life of the salons during their Parisian period, while Gaetano Donizetti also left behind more than two hundred songs. Stripped of any theatrical grandeur, they bring bel canto back to its essence: the refined beauty of the human voice, the pleasure of a melody on a verse of Italian poetry. This is precisely what Norma virtuosos Raffaella Lupinacci and Enea Scala would like to give you a taste of during their anthology from this surprising repertoire of arie da camera.
