Minimalist music is often presented as an American aesthetic, at the risk of minimizing its deep ties to non-Western music. Born between New York and California, it also emerges from Bali, Japan, India, and West Africa. Minimalism is perhaps the best thing exoticism has given us: a global sonic consciousness, as rich as it is ambiguous.
An hour to try to explore it all, between sound tourism and ethnomusicology, and explore the New York and Californian musical imagination of the 1960s and 1970s, from Indonesian gamelan to the pygmies of the Central African Republic, via Ghanaian percussion, Japanese court music and the rituals of Tibetan Buddhism.
