Paris thrived in the wake of Napoleon Bonaparte’s defeat at Waterloo, energised by an industrial revolution and corresponding cultural resurgence. Alexander Melnikov recalls the city’s vitality with an appetising selection of Rossini’s ‘Sins of Old Age’, pieces written or assembled in Paris in the 1850s, and the jaw-dropping virtuosity and brio of Liszt’s transcription of Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique.
