Few symphonies are as beloved as Mahler’s First, which in four sweeping movements conjures up an entire world, from dawn to klezmer celebration. At its premiere the music was derided by conservative audiences; today we smile at such incomprehension. But how many new sounds can we ourselves embrace? Time to have our ears cleansed by a Mahler of our own day: welcome Philippe Manoury.
