Sergei Rachmaninoff composed his Third Symphony in his later years. This gives the work the feeling of a look back on a life. With quiet intensity, the music reveals how memories grow heavier as time passes: nostalgic melodies, dark shadows and moments of unexpected lightness alternate. Benjamin Britten’s Violin Concerto also carries a sense of reflection. Written on the threshold of a new and uncertain world, the inner tension is reconciled with intense beauty.
