Bruckner was so distraught by the death of his idol Wagner that he transformed his Seventh Symphony into a monumental tribute. In the Adagio – a majestic elegy for the late master – his reverence for the composer is almost palpable. While Bruckner seems to make time stand still, Saint-Saëns lets it flow freely once more. Nicolas Altstaedt throws himself into his First Cello Concerto, a dazzling work in which virtuosity, energy and zest for life are the driving forces.
