As Christmas approaches, L’Auditori will be presenting Johann Sebastian Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, one of the most outstanding works of the Baroque repertoire. Composed in 1734 as a set of six cantatas for the main days of the Christmas period, the work presents a broad musical fresco that spans from the birth of Jesus to the Epiphany, in a multifacted piece of art full of emotions. The concert includes the exultation of the initial “Jauchzet, frohlocket, auf, preiset die Tage” chorus with the festive brilliance of trumpets and drums, as well as the expressive “Bereite dich, Zion, mit zärtlichen Trieben” aria, both intimate and restrained.
The performance will be led by expert Carlos Mena, with the participation of top-level vocal soloists: Elionor Martínez (soprano), Martina Baroni (mezzo), Reinoud Van Mechelen (tenor) and Ferran Albrich (baritone). The choral ensemble performing alongside the OBC is the Orfeó Català, a storied and internationally renowned ensemble, which will highlight the sonic and spiritual value of this seminal work in Bach’s repertoire.
