In this concert, two of the leading figures of the moment, violinist Augustin Hadelich and pianist Seong-Jin Cho, will take the audience on a wide-ranging journey through four very different creative universes, through Johannes Brahms’ Violin Sonata No. 1, Leoš Janáček’s Violin Sonata (1914), Amy Beach’s Romance for Violin and Piano, Op. 23 and Sergei Prokofiev’s Violin and Piano Sonata No. 2. Brahms takes an approach rooted in classical tradition with contrapuntal density and a skilled use of form. Janáček, on the other hand, brings a composition characterised by free expressiveness, fragmented motifs and an intense harmonic colour. Amy Beach’s piece is a work of delicate lyricism and late-Romantic composition, with a highly refined approach to timbre, by one of the most talented composers of the 19th century, a woman who is gradually being incorporated into the repertoire. Finally, Prokofiev combines playfulness, rhythmic energy and a virtuosity that engages with a clear structure in terms of form, but adds surprising twists. This piece will conclude a programme showcasing different understandings of violin and piano from contrasting aesthetic and historical perspectives.
