Saturday 31 May 2025 was a monumental day for the Dutch music world. Nikola Meeuwsen, just 23, made history as the first Dutch winner of the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels – widely considered one of the toughest musical contests on the planet. ‘In the gigantic solo cadenza [...] Meeuwsen wrapped his astonishing power in great emotional depths and a rare insight into Prokofiev’s musical structure,’ stated the jury, which consisted of master pianists. Today, he performs Beethoven’s Appassionata and more.
In this varied recital, Bach’s Chaconne is followed by the graceful suite Le tombeau de Couperin. In the quasi-Baroque style of this work, Ravel pays homage to the 18th century and commemorates friends lost in the First World War. The Variations sérieuses are among Mendelssohn’s most frequently performed keyboard works. But the crowning glory of this programme is Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 23. It was with good reason that the composer himself gave this sonata the adjective ‘appassionata’ (passionate, fervent).
