The Corsair, Lord Byron’s 1814 tale of the mysterious pirate captain Conrad and his daring raid against the Turks caught the imagination of creative artists all over Europe, inspiring numerous paintings and musical treatments. Guiseppe Verdi’s opera Il corsaro from 1848 fully enters into the swashbuckling spirit, evoking the tormented captain and offering haunting melodies for his lover Medora and for the harem slave Gulnara. The opera hasn’t been heard in London for around thirty years, making this performance a unique opportunity to hear a Verdi rarity. Rising star conductor Lewis Gaston joins Chelsea Opera Group for his company debut.
Concert performance sung in Italian with English surtitles.
Pre-concert talk by Simon Bainbridge (time tbc).
