The pair co-curate chamber music festival Musikfest in Paris, and they bring a taste of this to our hall in an evening of Bach, Liszt, Debussy and Franck.
Alexandre Kantorow opens solo with Liszt’s profound Variations on ‘Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen’. Written in the shadow of personal loss, they take a darkly descending bassline by Bach on a journey from grief towards affirmation.
Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence brings six string players together in music bursting with melody and movement. Inspired by cherished memories of the Italian city, its richly layered writing transforms the sextet into almost a miniature orchestra.
After the interval, Bach provides a moment of stillness before Debussy’s mercurial Violin Sonata, his final completed composition, and a colourful glimpse into Bartók’s folk-inspired Duos.
Franck’s youthful First Piano Trio brings piano, violin and cello together for the finale. Boldly conceived and symphonic in scope, it closes an evening that celebrates chamber music as a conversation: between individual musicians, between contrasting combinations of instruments, and across centuries.
Tickets: from £24
