Musicians of the Old Post Road

Musicians of the Old Post Road, a Greater Boston-based ensemble, specializes in performing music from the 17th to 19th centuries. Their performances emphasize the rediscovery and relearning of music from these eras, always on period instruments. Both BWV 170 and 173 are sacred cantatas written for the season that follows Easter. The contrast in BWV 209 is not only structure and instrumentation, but that it’s one of Bach’s only settings of text in Italian. This cantata’s material is mournful, with references to departing and sailing off to sea.
