In this poignant program, Nathalia Milstein and Maria Milstein take you on a moving musical journey exploring oppression, memory, and resilience, centered on the eventful life of Valéry Arzoumanov.
Born in 1944 in the Gulag, the son of victims of Stalin’s terror, Arzoumanov grew up near the Arctic Circle. His music exudes nostalgia, intensity, and inner strength. After his forced emigration to Paris, he studied with Messiaen and found a new artistic voice. In this concert, his works are framed by Messiaen’s refined musical language, Poulenc’s lyrical violin sonata, and Prokofiev’s poignant First Sonata. In the Milstein sisters’ inspired interpretation, a compelling journey unfolds, full of intensity and emotional depth—an evening that touches the heart and lingers in the memory.
