The history of the Leningrad Symphony reads like the script of a thrilling film. Shostakovich completed this poignant work while his city was under siege by German troops. He copied the score onto microfilm and had it smuggled via Tehran and Cairo to New York, where the performance was broadcast coast to coast on the radio. A new symphony becoming world news—this had never happened before.
