| Anna Vinnitskaya | Piano |
She was only 23 when she won the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels in 2007. For Anna Vinnitskaya, it marked the beginning of a stellar career. BBC Music Magazine described her music as an ‘absolute delight’ while De Volkskrant once wrote: ‘The sparks fly with Vinnitskaya’. The Russian pianist now graces the Muziekgebouw with three works that are undoubtedly among the most beloved of the Romantic era.
Brahms referred to his Three Intermezzi as ‘lullabies of my sorrow’ – gentle, wise music that is melancholic without being depressing. Rachmaninoff, by contrast, showcases the piano’s full range in his Corelli Variations. It’s one of his final works and written with incredible inventiveness. While we primarily know Chopin for his shorter forms – mazurkas, preludes, nocturnes – here he presents a full-blooded sonata. It’s pure passion in classical guise.
