“Understanding” is an evening exploring language that moves us, goes off the rails, and sometimes suddenly strikes a chord. Canadian-Dutch soprano Elisabeth Hetherington—winner of the Dutch Music Prize—curated this program with us. It is a quest to discover what happens when words fall short, and to explore those rare moments when we still manage to connect.
The tubular bells—sometimes whispering, sometimes commanding—serve as a sonic thread running through Understanding. You’ll hear, among other things, beautiful vocal solo pieces by Hetherington and the intense orchestral work Bouchara by Claude Vivier. Also featured is a new composition by Rozalie Hirs, known for her musical language that is both mathematical and spiritual. In this work, voice and violin feel each other out: questions, misunderstandings, silence, and occasionally a clear, shared moment. An intimate ode to the attempt to make genuine contact.
