‘But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks?’ Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet redefined romantic music, while Prokofiev brought Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers to the USSR – and gave us some of the 20th century’s loveliest melodies. Rachmaninov’s Second, meanwhile, has got to be the world’s dreamiest piano concerto, and with Elim Chan conducting the charismatic young Czech piano star Lukáš Vondrácek, it’s the passionate heart of a Valentine’s concert that’s much more than just a brief encounter.
