We are dedicating the opening concerts to the memory of Václav Neumann; the 100th anniversary of his birth falls on 29 September. One of his most important artistic achievements at the helm of the Czech Philharmonic was the now legendary recording of all of Mahler’s symphonies between 1976 and 1982. Present Chief Conductor Semyon Bychkov is having the orchestra record a complete Mahler cycle for the first time since then. For this reason, as a tribute to Václav Neumann, we have included one of Mahler’s best known symphonies on the programme of the opening concert.

Gustav Mahler spent two years writing the symphony and it reflects the beginning of his relationship with Alma, who would later become his wife. The slow movement, Adagietto, is regarded as Mahler’s love letter to Alma. The composer himself was aware that his music was ahead of the time in which he was living. After the première, he declared: “Nobody understood it. I would love to conduct the première fifty years after my death.” According to Herbert von Karajan, in the Fifth Symphony, “you forget that time has passed. A great performance of the Fifth is a transforming experience. The fantastic finale almost forces you to hold your breath.”

The concert begins with an equally powerful musical experience. Playing Shostakovich’s First Piano Concerto will be without exaggeration one of the best pianists of today, Daniil Trifonov, whose honours include victory at the Tchaikovsky Competitions in Moscow, a Grammy, and a Gramophone Award. Along with him, you will be able to admire the artistry of the young trumpet player Selina Ott, who won the prestigious ARD Competition in Munich.
