The members of London-based Doric String Quartet, founded in 1998, are skilled bridge builders between music past and present. Their lunchtime programme opens with a thrilling memory of Mozart’s close study of JS Bach and celebrates the vital energy and elan of Eleanor Alberga’s Second String Quartet, a single-movement work charged with tremendous joie de vivre. ‘The playing has all the fragile pathos, volatility, exuberance, and quirky humour one hopes to find in this music,’ wrote BBC Music Magazine in its five-star review of the ensemble’s recording of Schumann’s string quartets.
