Farewell concert of Elisabeth Kulman

Changed program: Unfortunately, a large-scale and cost-intensive choral-symphonic program with several soloists and a large choir from abroad is not feasible under the current circumstances. For this reason, to our great regret, we have to cancel the performance of the Brno Philharmonic Choir and the planned performance of Fiala's Stabat Mater and Janáček's Glagolitic Mass. Instead, for the first part of the concert evening, together with Elisabeth Kulman, we designed a program of works by Verdi, Dvořák, Wagner and Mahler. With this performance in Bamberg Elisabeth Kulman ends her singing career and says goodbye to her audience. In the second part of the program, we perform Anton Bruckner's 9th Symphony. On the occasion of the 125th anniversary of his death, we immerse ourselves in a "divine" confessional work - with which our principal conductor is now once again intensively engaged. For many decades, Bruckner's preferred working laboratory was the symphonic genre. But like other composers, he had a problem with the number nine, which after Beethoven's symphonic legacy was seen as a magically oppressive limit. Anxiously, Bruckner said, »I don’t want to begin the Ninth at all, I daren’t.« But apparently his creative interest was too great, and he then completed a mere three-movement torso dedicated "to the dear God" in 1896, for he died that same year. The symphony is a masterly swan song - with a heartfelt Adagio, which Bruckner characteristically wanted to be understood as a "farewell to life".
