| Beethoven, Ludwig van (1770-1827) | Fantasia in C minor for piano, chorus, and orchestra "Choral Fantasy", Op.80 | |
| Orff, Carl (1895-1982) | Carmina Burana |
Rudolf Buchbinder opens the 20th Grafenegg Festival with music by the composer of his life: Ludwig van Beethoven’s «Choral Fantasy» begins with a dramatic piano solo, which is in best hands with the festival director. The Philharmonia Orchestra under Cristian Măcelaru joins in quietly, before the Vienna Singverein delicately enters and everyone rises together to the anthemic conclusion. One of the most popular works of the 20th century is the «Carmina Burana», songs from Benediktbeuern, an extraordinarily, worldly celebration of medieval life, which Carl Orff moulded into immediately stirring, archaic and monumental sounds in 1935/36. The «Carmina» also provide great challenges for the solo voices and, of course, for the choirs: a delight for both audience and participants.
