Franz Liszt’s B minor Piano Sonata holds a truly iconic place in the piano repertoire. Universally admired for its colossal imaginative, intellectual and emotional power, the work continues to exert an enduring fascination for musicians and listeners alike.

Alfred Brendel, one of the greatest and most thoughtful of all Liszt interpreters has lived with, and pondered, this masterpiece for a lifetime. His performances, writings and polemics have played a major role in firmly establishing Liszt’s acknowledged position as one of the truly original musical geniuses of the 19th Century.

During this special lecture, Alfred Brendel will share his unique insights and thoughts into the extraordinary world of the B minor sonata. The evening will culminate in a performance of the sonata by one of today’s most admired master pianists – the Hungarian Dénes Várjon.

‘Dénes Várjon has produced an extraordinary version of the B minor Sonata that is imperative for devotees of the piece. He has all the power, passion, poetry and steely virtuosity you would expect... This is a monumental version of the masterpiece’ The Sunday Herald, 2014
