Julius Caesar, statesman, general and lover at the time of the Roman Republic, attracted a considerable amount of attention in the operatic literature of the Baroque. Not only G. F. Handel, but also G. Giacomelli, A. Pollarolo, N. Piccinni and F. Bianchi got to grips with the subject matter and in their works highlighted its many different perspectives. The Italian countertenor Raffaele Pe, who has already been enthusiastically received by audiences in Halle on several occasions, places this historical persona at the centre of the concert. “Regardless of whether the coloratura plumb the musical depths or demand horrendous leaps, or ever more lines are written legato: the part seems tailor-made for him. The countertenor is supported by the instrumental ensemble La Lira d’Orfeo. Gripping, sensitive, and with crystal-clear solo violins, the musicians provide the basis for thrilling interpretations” (www.klassik.com, review by S. Meier-Künzel, 8.1.2019). The period instrument ensemble La Lira d’Orfeo, conducted by Gian Andrea Guerra, will be appearing at the Halle Handel Festival for the first time.
