As part of The Rest Is Noise, the International Chamber Music Season conjures the feverish atmosphere and high-romantic aesthetic of Fin de siècle Vienna.

Composed in 1908, Schoenberg's luxuriant Second Quartet embodies the seismic moment when the system of major and minor tonality that had dominated Western music for 300 years was fractured.

The piece is particularly unusual because a part for soprano is introduced mid-way through. She sings 'I feel the air of other planets', seeming to foretell undreamt of musical worlds.

Songs by the three composers of the Second Viennese School, the revolutionary group of 20th century composers led by Schoenberg, open the programme, encapsulating the creative tension between high romanticism and music of the modern era.

Canadian soprano Barbara Hannigan is renowned as a performer of modern music, and places these beautiful songs alongside a musical rarity, Four Songs by the young Alma Mahler. The Guardian described Hannigan as being 'like a cross between Berg's Lulu and Madonna'.
