A breathtaking fusion of sound and colour, as Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Phil explore Messiaen’s visionary panorama of the American west.

'From the Canyons to the Stars': overwhelmed by the transcendent beauty of the Utah desert, Olivier Messiaen created music that reaches out to Infinity itself. Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic fuse it with the visuals by Deborah O’Grady, to ravishing effect.

For Messiaen, all beauty was a reflection of the Divine, and the glowing colours and vast starlit skies of Bryce Canyon, Utah, inspired him to some of his most vivid and radiantly expressive music. As part of their Green Umbrella contemporary music programme, Dudamel and his orchestra have commissioned visuals from photographer Deborah O’Grady – who shares Messiaen’s otherworldly vision of the beauty of the American landscape.
