As Hitler’s armies surrounded the city of Leningrad, Dmitri Shostakovich composed his Seventh Symphony. Written for massed battalions of musicians, this is music from the front line – they actually blasted it through loudspeakers at the Nazi forces. Every performance of the Leningrad Symphony is an event, and Peter Oundjian’s performance tonight will make a truly monumental contrast to Scriabin’s lush, fragrant Piano Concerto, played by the ‘awesome’ (Gramophone) Xiayin Wang. If you like Rachmaninov, you’ll love this!
