Following his performance of Grieg’s Piano Concerto
with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra last night
(Prom 58), German-born virtuoso Lars Vogt returns
to pay his own tribute to Czech music with Janá∂ek’s
last major piano work – its ‘mistiness’ captured in
evocative harmonies and constantly shifting
perspectives. By contrast, D894 is one of Schubert’s
more expansive sonatas, in which the easy-going tone
is typically invaded from time to time by anguished
intrusions but reasserts itself in a playful conclusion
