Sir Stephen HoughPiano

Stephen Hough presents a solo recital that explores every side of his artistic personality: thinker, creator and consummate virtuoso.

Hough is a phenomenon amongst pianists: a performer of astonishing technical brilliance with the power to find profundity in even the splashiest piano showpiece. Tonight he traces the darkness-to-light journey of three great pianist-composers – and premieres his own Third Sonata.

But this being Hough, there’ll be more to it than just transcendent performances of great but under-rated music. To celebrate the 175th anniversary of The Tablet, Hough has devised a programme by composers – Schubert, Liszt and Franck - whose spiritual preoccupations match his own; a thought-provoking context for a major new work by one of the few living musicians to have been awarded a MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant.
