Gageego!

In STHLM Blue Tide, we welcome what defies fixed categories – music and musicians that do not lend themselves easily to classification. The Gothenburg-based contemporary music ensemble Gageego! has been an experimental force in Sweden since 1995.

Esaias Järnegard’s music moves between the extremely fragile and the strikingly tangible. In tunnlar. diken. gravar. (“tunnels. ditches. graves.”), the title suggests an underground geography and music that digs its way forward. The Italian composer Clara Iannotta often transforms instruments: in Eclipse Plumage, for example, an “anti-machine” takes centre stage – designed to generate magnetic fields around the piano strings, creating invisible forces.

Jesper Nordin combines traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology. Surfaces scintillantes explores the relationship between surface and depth. The work is based on improvisations on a digital instrument, later “polished” to create the shimmering, delicate textures suggested by the title. Rebecca Saunders, by contrast, works with an extreme physical intensity: Fury II is a concerto for solo double bass and ensemble, depicting a state of rage.

The concert reaches its culmination in the world premiere of a new work by Djuro Zivkovic – Konserthuset’s Composer-in-Residence, whose music often moves between virtuosity and the deeply spiritual.
