Inspired by Wagner’s famous Die Meistersinger, Elgar’s large-scale Froissart Overture (brimming with heroism and grandeur) opens the final concert of our 2017 series.

Tchaikovsky’s profound melodic gift, exuberant orchestral imagination and unequalled ability to strike right to the core of human emotion have impressed and inspired for generations. His Second Piano Concerto is a gem of the Romantic era, particularly when performed by John Lill – praised for his sensitivity and unpretentious performance style.

Rounding out the concert is Walton’s Symphony No.1; he wanted to blow his contemporaries out of the symphonic water, and with this volcanic eruption of dark, sensual power, he did just that.
