Although soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek gained notoriety in 2011 for creating the title role in Mark-Anthony Turnage’s ripped-from-the-headlines opera Anna Nicole, she has long been regarded within operatic circles as a master of the Wagnerian style. She currently appears as Sieglinde in the Met’s new production of Wagner’s Ring cycle, and on this concert performs the Wesendonck Lieder. The program also features music from Tannhäuser, as well as Richard Strauss’s Eine Alpensinfonie.

Out of the pit and into the Alps with the MET Orchestra

The orchestra of the Metropolitan Opera House rarely gets out of its pit, but when it does, it plays at Carnegie Hall. Carnegie has a rather different acoustic to the Met – much more closely-held, much more intense – and its unforgiving glare occasionally presented one challenge too many for the MET Orchestra. Still, they acquitted themselves well in this matinée.
