Bruckner and Volkov, Prokofiev and Gringolts: two superb musicians, two stupendous works.
Prokofiev’s music can be on the gnarly side, often as spiky and unpredictable as the composer himself. But his Violin Concerto No. 1 is downright romantic, especially in its dreamy opening movement. Described as ‘sensational’ by reviewers, violinist Ilya Gringolts has been universally acclaimed for his performance of this concerto. Ilan Volkov, in his first concert as Principal Guest Conductor of the CBSO, is equally renowned for his performances of Bruckner’s symphonies. Here he leads one of the composer’s finest, noble in construction, and with a touching tribute to Wagner at its centre. A stirring and uplifting experience is guaranteed.
