Emotion, imagination and mind-boggling skill – this solo programme from Italian pianist Beatrice Rana has everything a piano fan could wish for.
‘Watching Rana play is magical… Her fingers seem to dance across the keys’ (Bachtrack). The dance begins with Bach’s Italian Concerto, ‘Composed for Music Lovers, to Refresh Their Spirits’, according to the first edition, and still doing so today. Next comes Clementi’s take on the story of Dido, Queen of Carthage. Her heartbreak at her abandonment by the Trojan warrior Aeneas is clear from the opening bar of Clementi’s eloquent score.
In Carnaval, Robert Schumann wrote 21 short musical portraits representing friends, colleagues and theatrical characters. Passion and grace for his beloved wife Clara, flowing melody for Chopin and dramatic virtuosity for Paganini – the endlessly varied colours of Schumann’s musical palette give different aspects of Rana’s artistry the chance to shine.
