In the aftermath of the Second World War, Richard Strauss composed his poignant Metamorphosen: a deeply personal lament and musical requiem for the destroyed culture of Europe. In slowly transforming lines, a world of sorrow, reflection and tranquil beauty unfolds – music that both mourns and comforts. While Strauss looks back with melancholy, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky lets the strings shine with warmth and zest for life in his Serenade for Strings.
