In the aftermath of the Second World War, Richard Strauss composed his poignant Metamorphosen: a deeply personal lament and musical requiem for the destroyed culture of Europe. In slowly transforming lines, a world of sorrow, reflection and tranquil beauty unfolds – music that both mourns and comforts. While Strauss looks back with melancholy, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky lets the strings shine with warmth and zest for life in his Serenade for Strings. From the solemn opening to the sparkling finale, a wealth of dance and melody is revealed. In the hands of the string players of the Budapest Festival Orchestra, it sounds all the more intense.
