The closing concert will bring together two large-scale works that place the band at the intersection of contemporary creation and the Romantic repertoire. Symphony No. 3, “Jalupe”, by Luis Serrano Alarcón, one of the great names of composition for band, is known for its clear structure and exquisite use of instrumental colour. The work alternates between driving rhythmic passages and broader, more lyrical sections, testing the ensemble’s precision and cohesion while showcasing the composer’s hallmark blend of modern clarity and direct expressiveness.
The second part features Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, composed after the failure of his First Symphony. Struggling with a severe creative block, the composer regained his confidence with the support of Dr Nikolai Dahl, to whom he expressed his gratitude by dedicating the work. Premièred to great success in Moscow, the concerto is known for its harmonious depth, dramatic energy and highly demanding solo parts. Pianist Raúl da Costa joins the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra under the baton of José R. Pascual-Vilaplana for a season finale that brings together Romantic passion and contemporary creativity with striking musical impact.
