Beethoven compresses an extraordinary range of emotions and life into the two short movements of his Piano Sonata in F sharp. The piece, which he dedicated to Countess Thérèse von Brunswick and ends with a set of witty variations on the theme from Arne’s ‘Rule, Britannia’, serves as the springboard for Igor Levit’s survey of works spanning a remarkable period in Beethoven’s creative life, crowned in 1810 by the Piano Sonata ‘Les Adieux’, a recollection of the Archduke Rudolf’s departure from Vienna during Napoleon’s siege of the city.
