The ancient Greeks already knew this: opposites do not necessarily lead to conflict; on the contrary, they can generate new energy. Music is a striking example of this: harmony arises only when different, sometimes even contrasting, sounds come together. Johanna Soller juxtaposes Baroque compositions by J.C. Bach and Buxtehude, which explore the struggle between good and evil, with Arvo Pärt’s modern work Fratres. This piece is the ultimate example of the beauty of difference: the seemingly clashing C and C-sharp alternate in this work in a harmonious union. Together with a cast of top soloists – Carine Tinney, Alex Potter, Guy Cutting and Matthias Winckler – Johanna Soller celebrates the energy of contrasts.
