Pianist Hélène Grimaud has themed her entire recital around water, finding a shared vision in music by Liszt, Albeníz and Debussy.
Hélène Grimaud has based this programme around the theme of water, travelling from the fountains of the Villa d’Este to the coast of Brittany. And whether in a Liszt showpiece or the impressionist subtleties of Gabriel Fauré, she’ll strive for the emotional truth behind the programmatic surface.
Hélène Grimaud has been called 'a renaissance woman', and her painterly, passionate sensibility makes everything she plays glow with colour. 'Grimaud doesn’t sound like most pianists' says The New Yorker, 'she is a rubato artist, a reinventor of phrasings, a taker of chances.' Few living pianists play with Grimaud’s drive or physicality, and this is a typically imaginative programme. Grimaud herself has described how 'Romanticism is, for me, much more than a period in culture', and in her recital tonight Grimaud’s 'scintillating intelligence' (Independent) will find the shared vision amongst composers as varied as Liszt, Fauré, Janáček and Debussy.
