Steven Osborne | Klavier |
Music at the speed of stillness: pianist Steven Osborne immerses himself in the meditative sound-world of George Crumb and Morton Feldman.
Steven Osborne is a virtuoso who’s never afraid to push the boundaries – yet finds the inner poetry in everything he plays. George Crumb and Morton Feldman are often described as American radicals, yet their slow, intensely inward piano music is revolutionary in its quietness and simplicity.
Feldman’s music has been compared to looking at a Mark Rothko painting; George Crumb’s Little Suite draws its imaginative energy from Giotto. Yet both offer a compelling and completely different listening experience: a sonic universe at once removed from everyday life. It’s hard to think of a living pianist better-equipped than Steven Osborne to find the still centre and deep beauty behind its formidable technical demands.
Steven Osborne will introduce and discuss this mysterious music in the first half of the concert.
